How to Become an Esthetician in Connecticut

In 1937, Connecticut became the first state to issue permanent license plates for automobiles. In contrast, this state has never required estheticians to be licensed. Unlike the similar careers of cosmetologists and barbers, estheticians do not need to have any type of license in order to practice esthetics in this state.

No Licensure Requirements for Estheticians

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, there is no state licensing or certification offering or requirement for estheticians or skin care specialists in this state. In fact, Connecticut is the only state in the nation to not require some type of formal education and licensure/certification of estheticians. However, pursuing formal education and training in this cosmetology field will help bring credit to this field and can help you establish yourself as a dedicated and knowledgeable professional.

What do Estheticians do?

Estheticians are widely known for helping their clients look and feel their best. Also known as skin care specialists, professionals in this field cleanse and otherwise beautify the face, neck, and upper chest area to help improve the appearance, and sometimes even the health, of the skin. Estheticians evaluate their clients’ skin care needs and discuss available treatments. They can remove hair using threading, tweezing, and waxing techniques as well as perform other approved treatments. Some skin care specialists focus on color theory and makeup to help their clients look their best.

As part of the nature of their job, estheticians need to know about sanitation and clean-up as well as the proper procedures for cleaning up blood. They also need to be aware of when to refer their clients to higher level specialists such as a dermatologist.

Some estheticians will need to have good business skills if they prefer to run their own spa or salon. Estheticians should also have good listening and communication skills. Because estheticians are often on their feet while providing skin care services, they will need to be in good physical condition to perform their jobs as best as they can.

Some even offer more flexibility with options for online classes, part-time coursework, and even evening courses to make it easier for you to fit your schoolwork into your busy lifestyle.

An esthetic program should include the following:

  • Electrical esthetician equipment
  • Makeup application and color theory
