Step 1: Complete a State Approved Esthetics Program

Esthetician licensing is handled by the State of Delaware Board of Cosmetology and Barbering.

The apprenticeship must be completed within 2 years, and the total number of hours worked per day must not exceed 10, with no more than 40 hours worked per week.

Your training should include the following topics:

  • Nutrition
  • Waxing

Once you have completed your online application at PCS, you must then submit the following items to Professional Credential Services via mail, fax, email, or uploaded to your PCS homepage:

  2. An official English-language high school transcript or GED.

Apprenticeship students are only required to submit a current “2 x 2” passport type color photo (selfies are not accepted).

The total exam fee for both exams is $195 for first-time test takers. The re-exam fee for both exams is $145.

You can register for the theory examination by going here and doing the following:

  1. Select “Government/State Licensing Agencies” from the Select Organization drop-down menu.
  2. Select “Delaware”.
  3. Select “DE Cosmetology”.
  4. Click the “DE Esthetician Theory Examination – English” link in the Classification menu.
  5. After the webpage loads, click the “Sign In or Create an Account” button and either sign in or create a new account.

You also have the option of scheduling your exam over the phone by calling a PSI representative toll-free at 1-800-733-9267 (Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM EST and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST).

You can also schedule your theory exam using PSI’s Interactive Voice Response System during non business hours at 1-800-733-

Step 3: Take and Pass the Theory and Practical Esthetician Examinations

The Delaware Board of Cosmetology and Barbering contracts with PCS to register applicants for the exam and to administer the practical exam. The NIC theory exam is administered by PSI Services.

A score of 75 is required for passing both the theory and practical exams. Your official results will be emailed to the address on file within about 10 days after both exams have been completed.

Step 4: Renew Your DE Esthetician License Every Two Years

As a licensed esthetician in Delaware, you are required to renew your license by March 31st of even numbered years. Several weeks before this date, you should receive a renewal notice in the mail. The notice will tell you how to complete your online renewal application.

A credit card will be required to pay your esthetician license renewal fee. Continuing education credits are not required for estheticians in the state of Delaware. However, you can further advance your career and the field by joining professional associations and keeping up on advances in the field with self-study modules and attending seminars.

Esthetician License Reciprocity in Delaware

If you have an esthetician license that is current in another state where the requirements are equal or greater than those of Delaware (600 hours of training through a licensed school or 1200 hours of training through an approved apprenticeship), you can complete an application for License Reciprocity with the Delaware State Board. There are two methods to doing this based on the number of classroom hours or apprenticeship hours you completed in your home state:

  1. Method 1 means that the licensure requirements for your current license were substantially the same as those of Delaware.
  2. Method 2 means that the licensure requirements for your current license were not substantially the same as Delaware’s requirements.

Both Methods require you to have passed a theory and practical examination which was professionally developed and used on a national basis (such as NIC Testing).
